Laptime Songs for Mommies

Looking for ways to interact with your little ones…

Bring the Joy of the Library’s Laptime Program
Into Your Own Home

Bond with your little ones through reading, singing and cuddling…

Dear Friend,

“They grow so fast!” “Cherish the time when your children are babies. It goes by too fast.” “They’ll be grown before you know it.”You’ve probably heard these statements time and again from friends, family and perfect strangers. True as it may be, staring at your newborn who just won’t sleep does not necessarily make you want to cherish that moment! So what do you do?

We found our solution at the local public library. We attended the laptime program they offered for little ones and their caregivers. We loved it so much that we attended it three times a week! We sang songs, chanted nursery rhymes, and listened to amazing books that fit my little one’s interests and age perfectly. It was a great way to spend a half an hour of our day. But then the program was over. Our friends left. And we were on our own again.

We needed something to do in the time between library visits. We desperately needed a way to make the monotonous tasks of every day more interesting for both of us. I was also concerned about developing a strong bond with my new daughter and wondered constantly about what I could do to encourage her development.

I decided to bring the principles of the Laptime Program into our daily interactions!

We discovered many benefits from incorporating Laptime principles into our daily routines

  • Gave us something to do!
  • Livened up our routines!
  • Provided my daughter a way to communicate with me!

My First Obstacle

In bringing songs and rhymes home from the library, I found I had a really hard time holding onto a familiar melody while I sang new lyrics. I was so frustrated because I knew “I’m a Little Teapot” and had just learned a cute variation called “I’m a Little Snowflake” and I couldn’t put the two together. I kept losing the tune. Sammi would get bored with my failed attempts and we would revert back to the monotony.

I dreamed of a way to hear the melody while I looked at the words of the new rhyme. I searched the Internet high and low for such a tool. My searches always came up empty. I was disappointed and frustrated. I kept going back to the library hoping the tellers would do the songs and rhymes I was struggling with. But that rarely happened.

The Birth of Laptime Songs for Mommies

In my blog, Because Babies Grow Up, I introduced a new segment call Musical Mondays where I shared videos of me singing different songs with the girls. The goal was for them to hear the words with the tune in order to sing it on their own with their little ones. But, I’m not a great singer, and this was my problem to begin with so I looked for other ways to make this resource more useful.

We made friends with a family where the husband was a musician, drummer and rocker, who had a soft spot for kids and kid music. We collaborated and ran through some ideas and finally we hit on the perfect solution: Laptime Songs for Mommies. We focused on 6 traditional songs and then found variations of rhymes that matched each song. Each song is presented on one page. You can click to listen to the song while looking at from 4 to 8 variations. In all, this book contains over 50 rhymes. Then I arranged some of the rhymes around topics familiar and loved by little ones. On one page is a complete outline for a laptime experience with your little: book, rhymes/songs and even a craft for older ones. There are 3 printables for crafts that go with the different themes.
